Overview

Genoa City is a fictional northern city in Wisconsin in the United States. It is the setting of the CBS television daytime soap opera The Young and the Restless.

Genoa City is recognized as a global city because of its importance in finance, commerce, media, entertainment, arts and international trade. Within the city boundaries are many office buildings, a major international airport and a top hospital. Genoa City also happens to be home to many large companies including large conglomerates.

Economy

The internationally known Jabot Cosmetics is famous for their colognes and perfumes, with "Ashley" being one of their best sellers and their Glo by Jabot ad campaign was nationally recognized for incorporating local teens in a summer long campaign a la "Real World".Newman Enterprises, headed by world renowned business tycoon Victor Newman, is a conglomerate that not only competes with Jabot in the cosmetics field but has interests in real estate, medical research, as well as other businesses ripe to be bought up. Chancellor Industries, headed by Katherine Chancellor is another powerhouse conglomerate. You'll also find the home office of Fenmore's Department Stores, headed by the Founders daughter Lauren Fenmore Baldwin in Genoa City.

Tourism

Genoa City also boasts 4 star hotels such as the Genoa City Hotel and the Genoa City Athletic Club which is a hotel/athletic club/restaurant. Near by to the Athletic Club you will find the most popular coffee shop in town, Crimson Lights.

Genoa City is becoming more popular for tourism. Local attractions include a large lake where activities such as ice fishing, swimming, and other water sports are enjoyed. On the outskirts of the city, visitors can rent cabins for quiet getaways. Although winters are harsh, many residents utilize the lakes and cabins for spending time with family and friends. Ironically, the fictional town uses Lake Racine as a mid- to large-sized lake in the area, while Racine is near Lake Geneva in Wisconsin.

Throughout the city you can find many homes including Condominiums, basic houses, farms and lush estates. Two prominent estates are the Abbott Mansion, where the founders of Jabot Cosmetics live and the Chancellor Estate, home of Katherine Chancellor and Jill Foster Abbott. The other major residence to note is that of the Newman Ranch home to Genoa City's most prominent citizen, Victor Newman and his family. Both the Chancellor Estate and the Newman Ranch enjoy stables and horses and plenty of pastures for riding.

Education

Education is a big thing in the City and it includes fine schools.

Public schools include Genoa City Elementary and Genoa City High School. Walnut Grove Academy, is a private school that many of the children of the most prominent families of the city attend. And then there's the local college, Genoa City University also known simply as GCU.

Crime

Unfortunately throughout the years, the city has continuously had crime issues, from petty crime to corporate sabotage and even to kidnapping and murder. Multiple murderers have been let loose from jail including most recently Jana Hawkes and some crimes have never been solved and just been dropped.

Also the city's climate while fairly calm has recently been going through yearly storm surges. Usually at winter at which time most of the city is forced to shut down and come to a complete halt.

In November 2007 there was a major incident at the Clear Springs project that involved the collapse of a major underground parking structure and the casino, that killed one person and injured many. Currently there are outstanding lawsuits surrounding this issue and Victor Newman's drilling company.

Residences

Estates

  • The Abbott Mansion (603 Glenwood Drive) - is the home of the Abbott family. John Abbott raised his children here as he built Jabot Cosmetics. Jack Abbott has lived in this house most of his life; firstly with his father and sisters, and later, his wives. John Abbott's youngest son, Billy Abbott, lives in the pool house. This is a large beautiful estate with many buildings including a main house, pool house, a large wine cellar, and the Abbott Playhouse.
  • The Newman Ranch (421 Larkspur Trail, Highway B) - is home to the Newman family. When he moved to Genoa City Victor Newman bought the ranch from Katherine Chancellor and has lived here ever since with his family. Ashley Abbott lives at the main house with her daughter Abby Carlton and Victor's son Adam Wilson, neé Victor Newman Jr. . Nicholas Newman and his wife Phyllis Newman and their daughter Summer live in the tack house. J. T. Hellstrom and Victoria Newman as well as their son Reed Hellstrom live in the old foreman's house, which was inhabited by Nick and his first wife Sharon. It's a huge secluded property that includes stables and many trails for riding horses, which is a favorite pastime for the Newmans with full security and all possible amenities. The main house in particular is a very rustic all wood house with multiple wings, although most scenes take place in one of two rooms.
  • The Chancellor Estate (12 Foothill Road) - Katherine Chancellor lives here with her husband, Patrick Murphy, Jill Foster Abbott, Nina Webster, Phillip Chancellor III and their son Chance Chancellor, as well as their live-in maid Esther Valentine, Esther's daughter, Chloe Mitchell along with her daughter Delia Abbott. The Chancellor estate is quite likely the most impressive in the entire city. The estate was the original home of Katherine Shepard's first husband, Gary Reynolds, and was inherited by Katherine upon Gary's death. When Katherine later remarried to Philip Chancellor II and became Katherine Chancellor, the name of the estate was changed to the Chancellor Estate and has remained such for the past five decades.
  • The Carlton Manor (1185 Cottage Grove Road) - Owned by Abby Carlton but being rented to Sharon Newman along with her son Noah Newman.
