Tabaluga

The little green Dragon Tabaluga is a cartoon character, who lives in the fictional place of Greenland. He is around 7 dragon-years old (700 human years, as one year for a dragon is 100 for a human). He is the creation of the German Rock musician Peter Maffay, children's song writer Rolf Zuckowski and the author Gregor Rottschalk. The artist Helme Heine drew the image of Tabaluga as we know it currently.

The musical "Tabaluga & Lilli" celebrated its premiere on 24 September 1999 in the TheatrO CentrO, Oberhausen, and ran there until 30 June 2001. The little dragon managed to unite the High Society of German musical actors, with stars such as Andreas Bieber, Ross Antony, Paul Kribbe, Carolin Fortenbacher The first studio album "Tabaluga or the journey to reason." (1983) was the step to success: within the next years some Helme Heine books, four studio albums, a resounding tour and many TV Cartoons which have been broadcasting in over 100 countries round the world followed. Over 100 kindergartens and child care groups carry the word "Tabaluga" in their names.

Flying Bark Animation (previously known as Yoram Gross Films) has also produced an animated cartoon series of Tabaluga. In this series, Tabaluga is the last of the dragons and the crown-prince of Greenland, a magical place inhabited by talking animals of many different species. Tabaluga must defend his home from two rival kingdoms on either side of Greenland; a frigid arctic tundra, ruled by the evil snowman Arktos and a searing desert, ruled by an evil sand-spirit named Humsin.

  • Lilly (or Lilli): A sculpture created by Arktos. She played an important role in only one episode, but is one of the main protagonists of the album "Tabaluga und Lilli" by Peter Maffay and in the self-named musical. She appeared at the 24th episode of the first season, and the story was equal to the story told on the album: When Tabaluga saw Lilly for the first time, he immediately had a strange but wonderful emotion he couldn`t explain to himself - all he could think or dream about was Lilly. This has been the intention of Arktos: he wanted Tabaluga to forget everything but Lilly. He invited Tabaluga to an event which seemed to be an art festival. There, he presented Lilly to the audience and immediately tried to destroy her. Completely desperated, Tabaluga pleased Arktos to kill him instead of her. Arktos challenged the dragon to a gambling duel, telling him that Arktos would be the master of Tabaluga`s fire if he had won - but if Tabaluga won, nothing would happen to Lilly. Tabaluga won the duel and saved Lilly`s life. When the furious Arktos then tried to finish the dragon, Lilly prevented him to do so. Then, because of a volcano eruption, everything made out of ice (e. g. the palace where the event took place) has been destroyed - everything but Lilly. Tabaluga saw that he was able to break the ice around Lilly`s heart with his fire. When he did so and came to Lilly to ask her about that strange feeling he has been carrying around since he saw her for the first time, she hugged him, calling him her "little hero" and telling him that she shared that feeling for him, that this emotion they feel for each other was called love, and that the love he gave to her was a great present to her which saved her life.

Lilly will also appear in the new 2012 musical of Tabaluga - "Tabaluga and the Signs of Time". At the end of the story, a girl-like being (indicating "The Time") appears to Tabaluga and promises to fulfill his greatest wish. The dragon tells the Time that he would give everything to spend the rest of his life with Lilly, and if this would not be possible, he wanted nothing but to have just one final dance with her. The Time then turns into Lilly, and the thoroughly happy Tabaluga enjoys this last dance with the love of his life...
